Why should I use a graphic recorder at my event?
- Participants often say that they find the recording stimulating and powerful; the recording process is a
communication tool that shows people meanings and links between ideas.
- Graphic recording during a workshop is fun but seriously contributes to the dynamic in the room, whether it's reflecting on what a speaker has said or seeing ideas unfold.
- Graphic recording is back to basics - we leave the PowerPoint and laser pointers behind and use pens and paper. Though I am quiet there is creative activity in rooms that are often dominated by left brain thinking.
- The charts provide your participants with some immediate feedback, they can literally see what is being said and make connections because the conversation has become tangible.
- Graphic recording is useful in situations where different cultures, ages, opinions and literacy levels meet because it shows the conversation mapped out in a way that everyone can understand, during and after the event, helping to align your group.
What sort of events do you record?
Graphic recording works almost anywhere that people are talking, such as workshops, conferences, meetings and seminars. I have also recorded at an outdoor rap workshop for kids, at community centres and libraries.
What do you actually do during the event?
I listen, think, organise write and draw on big pieces of paper that I cut to size. I use any breaks that you
schedule to complete and colour the charts. I work alongside the facilitator and like to use positive visual
metaphors to illustrate and record what is said.
I like to hang completed charts around the venue so that people can browse during breaks and in-between sessions. People often discuss and reflect on what has been said during this time.
I typically work on charts that are 2m long and 1.5m tall, but can adapt to suit your space and requirements. I create as many charts as the conversation needs and the speed and content of the session influences the evolution of the charts.
I bring all my own materials. Wall space is useful for the recording and display of charts as the event unfolds, and I can hang the pictures without damage to the venue wall surfaces.
What happens to the charts afterwards?
I photograph the charts on site and you take away the originals.
Here are a few things clients have done with my charts:
- Presented the charts in meetings to communicate key messages
- Illustrated follow up material, printed newsletters and emails
- Kept as a record the event
- Laminated and taken along to subsequent meetings to remind participants what was said last time and brighten up the room
- Displayed as artwork on walls in offices, youth centres and libraries.
If you need a more polished or a single work to represent the outcome of the event, I can create a chart that pulls together the themes or ideas that you want to represent and communicate.
How do we arrange a graphic recording of my event?
Please contact me to talk about your requirements.
I work with the facilitators or organisers to find out how graphic recording fits into the event and to understand any key content or context. You may decide that you would like me to create some templates or charts before the meeting to provide visual impact for participants as they enter the space.
Some clients like me to prepare agendas, charts depicting key themes and stories to date. Activity templates are also popular, see my portfolio for some examples.
I like to work in a colourful and positive style and we discuss any particular requirements regarding colours, size and content.
Do you need to know anything before the event?
Before the event I can provide templates for workshop participants and activities. I am happy to discuss your ideas for workshop and communications materials.
As far as the event goes, it depends on the format of the day. If you need logos or specific slides drawn up, then you can provide me with the detail beforehand. Otherwise, I start with a blank sheet of paper and track the conversation and activity in the room as it unfolds.
It is helpful to know what the wall surfaces will be like - there's a huge variety, but if you can let me know then I am better prepared.
I am a graphic recorder - do you work with others?
Yes! I sometimes work at events with multiple graphic recorders and it's inspiring and fun. I have yet to work on a joint chart, please contact me if you would like to have a chat.
Anything else?
A tip! When you look at graphic recordings on the web, you'll see a big difference between charts.
- Make sure you know if you are looking at a live recording or a chart done at the artist's leisure.
- Be aware that most recorders try to clean up chart photos to some extent, usually to remove the yellowish colour cast from the lighting in the event room.
The photos in my gallery are "as is", apart from removal of yellow colour cast where possible, and I give explanations of the circumstances where the charts were created, so you can be sure that what you see is what you get.
I see you are a technical writer, what does that mean?
I can help you with writing tasks using plain English and a dynamic tone. I am trained to write manuals and online help, instructions and precis. My favourite writing assignments are those where I am asked to put documents into plain English. I'm a communications studies graduate, a Master of technology and am currently working towards a qualification in technical writing. I have twenty years of corporate experience.
